Durand Welcomes New Therapy Dog
Durand, Inc., a multi-services agency which supports individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, including autism, becomes the first private day school in the region to offer a full-time service dog for its students. Georgia, a labradoodle, will provide emotional support and a calming presence to help students manage anxiety, improve communication, and build confidence throughout their school day.
On “National Love Your Pet Day” the Durand school welcomed Georgia as the newest member of the staff. As a certified therapy dog, Georgia will assist students reduce stress, foster social interactions, and improve communication skills for children with autism. Georgia isn’t just a dog—she is a friend, a helper, and a powerful reminder of the impact of unconditional love and connection. One of our long-time students, who rarely shows emotional affect, smiled for the first time upon meeting Georgia. That moment was priceless and exemplifies how this initiative furthers our mission to provide innovative programs that enhance the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities.
Through a unique partnership, Durand partnered with Paws Healing Heroes, a Glassboro-based organization founded by Army veteran Mark Eberle, to certify a staff member’s pet, Georgia, as an emotional support dog. While Paws Healing Heroes primarily trains rescue dogs to assist veterans, the organization expanded its mission to support Durand with this request.
